I think, from a cultural point of view, it's not unreasonable to point out that that isn't an acceptable thing to say in BrE.

It doesn't have anything to do with British English, or British culture either, in my opinion. The word fat does have negative connotations, yes, but not just in British English.

My Spanish teacher made a point of explaining that in Mexico, "fat" wasn't at all derogatory.
