A Threat to the Word: Extremism

Many would agree that extremism is a negative and even a dangerous thing. However, no one see’s themselves as an extremist, they are just right. Take for example a Christian disapproving of a Muslim because they are “blind, extremist, and/or close minded”. However, the Muslim can say the exact same thing to the Christian. In reality, both are blind, extremists, and/or close minded. However, how can this pose a threat to the society or the world in general? It is because of this extremism that people become blind that there are multiple ways to look at things an/or they are right and everyone else is wrong. This creates people who want to help a certain cause no matter how immoral it would be. Wither it is Germany trying to take over the world during World War II or suicide bombings of Islamic extremists in Iraq; extremism destabilizes society as a whole and could lead to the end of human kind. Understanding this effect that extremism could bring would lead to the understanding of the importance to solve the causes of extremism, namely general ignorance and a population being treated unfairly.

Since the creation of weapons of mass destruction there has been a struggle between the people who already have them and the people who want to attain them. With good reason, the world is already a dangerous and unstable place with those who already had them. We already realize that it only takes one nut job with a bad childhood to end the world if they have these weapons. However, case after case, it is shown that the people that most likely would use them are extremists. After all, which logical person would end the world or kill thousands of innocent people? However, there are a lot of extremists in the world, United States included. It is the mixture of extremism and putting pressure on these people that put the world in danger. Germany during WWII for example. Hitler was not a very sane or moderate person. However what made him dangerous is that Germany just got out of WWI and essentially had to pay war debts beyond belief. These hard times enabled an extremist like Hitler to come to power and persuade that Jews were the source of their problems and they should take over the world because the Aryan race was the superior race. What would the world look today if Hitler obtained Nuclear weapons or won? Or Russia sent a nuke to the US during the cold war? This is the problem of extremism, which is why it is important to understand what causes it and fix it.

General ignorance is the main cause of extremism, which is not dangerous when in normal conditions. If a person is ignorant, that doesn’t mean the person is an idiot. They are just misinformed. Hitler was very smart; he just had a very bad childhood and life experiences. This ignorance leads to extremism for a certain cause. There are Christian extremists, Islamic extremists, Jewish extremists, racial extremists, etc. What would solve this problem is general education of religion and how they are similar. Also, we should add philosophy is the general curricula because this helps understand how a person becomes the person they do. Also Philosophy teaches and there are multiple ways to look at things, all having their strengths and weaknesses, and one isn’t obviously more true than the other.
What makes these extremists dangerous is if they are put in a stressful position as a whole. Christians in American often say that “We don’t blow ourselves up like Muslims do, which is a reason why they are a pseudo religion”. However we have to look at why they do it. Obviously they are extremists for Islam, but why don’t Christian extremists blow themselves up? It is because of the situation they are put in. What would Christian Extremists do if an Islamic superpower invaded the U.S.? If they kill doctors that preform abortions imagine if the above occurs. This would be solved by simply not invading or exploiting a nation of their resources which is used by extremists to justify their acts.

Extremism is a very hard thing to destroy because there always has to be an uneducated majority of the population ruled by the few. Yes, even the U.S. is rules by the few. Our views are manipulated by big business companies who fund the campaigns Politian’s and advertising on television. The hardest problem is actually educating the public. The thing that makes extremism dangerous however is a very simple thing to fix. Just don’t invade a country or exploit their resources unjustifiably. If we do either, hopefully both, this world would be a safer and more stable one to live in.

You are joking, right?
