I thought it is/was difficult

A child has taught his grandpa how to use 'Whatsapp'. His grandpa said:

1. I thought it is difficult.
2. I thought it was difficult.

Are both sentences both possible?
 
Only the second works.
 
I agree with 5jj, but the sentence is not very natural.

How about, "That was easier than I thought (it would be)"?
