I have seen many ways of describing this online. Which of them is more correct?

'Her hair was tied in/into a ponytail.'

'Her hair was tied up in/into a ponytail.'

'Her hair was tied back in/into a ponytail.'

Also, do the same rules apply to pigtails and buns?

I think the first is more natural.

All three statements about ponytails seem equally fine to me. Pigtails, however, are usually braided, although I have seen a pair of unbraided side bunches called pigtails.

So, I use 'tied' or 'braided' for pigtails depending on the style?

I guess so.

'His hair is tied back in a ponytail.

That's the one I use of my son. That doesn't mean it's the best or most natural. It's just the one I use.
