Hello forum,

I am searching for an idiom similar to the German "auf Augenhöhe sein".

That idiom means that two individuals or sportsteams have got equal or very similar abilities and qualities and the result of a competition is difficult to predict, for instance a soccer match England - Italy, or a box bout between Mike Tyson - Evander Holyfield.

A poor translation could be "The two men/teams are on the same level", "A fight on the same level". I have found something like "To meet each other at eyelevel", "A fight on an equal footing" but there is maybe something better.

I must add that this idiom isn't used exclusively in the context of sport, it could be used in other too (for instance when two Nobel prize winners meet).

Thank you for your help

How about too close to call?

All I can think of is "evenly matched" or, as you suggested, "on equal footing."

Okay, thank you. "On equal footing" sounds quite good in my ears. I think I will use that in my writing.
