I'm sailing home again cross the sea?

Dear all,

I'd like to ask about the lyrics of Sailing by Rod Stewart.

I'm sailing I'm sailing home again cross the sea
I'm sailing stormy waters to be near you to be free

Why is "cross" used in stead of "across"? It seems to me "across" should be used here.

I don't think "cross" can be used as a preposition like "across".

Across is correct; cross is not, but it fits the rhythm. As we so often say in this forum, "Do not try to learn English grammar from song lyrics".

PS Song lyrics you find on the net (or on record sleeves) are usually transcribed by people who don't care much about apostrophes - one suspects that some of them haven't even heard of them. As Dave Barry said, an apostrophe means 'Here comes an s''. ;-)
