Is the word "Academic" a noun? Or an adjective?

It is from Microsoft's Bing Browser interface:

It can be either, depending on context. When used about a person who holds a university appointment it is a noun. For example, one of my sons--in-law is an academic (noun). Each year he teaches a course for first-year students on academic (adjective) writing.

It looks like an adjective to me.

When academic is a noun, it means scholar. If that's what they meant, it would probably be pluralized.

What is odd is that among a bunch of nouns(Images Videos Dict Maps), it stands alone as an adjective. And it seems you can't find a noun instead to make it harmonious with others.

Absolutely! Those poor folks at Bing don't know squat about parallel construction.

Or harmony, either, now that you mention it!
