Hi Kitoto

As a NES, but not a teacher:

A "ground clearing exercise" can be used in a number of contexts. Examples could be:

1. Stripping the ground of existing vegetation prior to planting with new crops or performing building work.
2. An army clearing the ground ahead of mines or enemy forces prior to advancing.

Hope this helps

It would help if you presented the phrase in context.

from a text about international relations theory.

"M. Hoffman has aptly described Linklater's work as a "gorund-clearing exercise". (cont.) Over the past two decades, Linklater has attempted to construct an intellectual and practical project within a discipline whose very autonomy in the social sciences is a barrier to that project"

Many Thanks

And please note, kitoto, that Ground clearing exercise would have been a more meaningful thread title than Re: Important please.
