What is the difference between "in a tree " and "on a tree"?e.g. I can see six monkeys hanging in a tree. Is this sentence is correct ?

I'd say "I can see six monkeys hanging from the branches of a tree". Without "hanging", the choice is easier. "There are six monkeys in that tree".

If the monkeys are sitting on the very top of the tree, you could use on, otherwise use in.
