in/at the back

1) The bus was almost empty. I sat alone in/at the back, looking out the window.

2) I sat down in/at the back of the room.

What is correct in the two examples - in or at?

BrE would use "at the back" in both examples.

Here in Canada either is acceptable and both are about equally common in both 1 and 2.
