in/on the ceiling

Hello,

I'm interested to know which preposition is correct when we speak about a ceiling in different contexts:

1) The painting on/in the ceiling was marred because of the demolition of two chandeliers and lack of maintenance

2) There was a big hole in/on the ceiling and through that hole snow was able to get into the room.

My take on this:

1 On (it's on the surface)
2 In (it goes through the surface)

I would use "the paint on the ceiling, not "the painting". With "painting" I assumed you meant some art, like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel!

I meant just that actually. A piece of art on the ceiling. Maybe not as beautiful as the one in the Sistine Chapel, but definitely a piece of art.
