[General] in or on the campus?

English teachers of the Chinese origin give such a rule:

in the university
on the campus

Sounds like 'in the campus' is not accepted English. Is that so? Thank you.

Not only would I say that it should be "on", but also that "the" isn't always necessary.

I'm a student at Southampton University.
Do you live in town?
No, I live on campus.

However, it is required sometimes:

I'm going to play tennis.
Where?
At the courts on the university campus.
 
It is the same on this side of the Atlantic.

This sounds to me as if the speaker is possibly not a student there.

That's a good point. I imagine if you were a student there, you would probably say "At the courts on campus". Thanks.
