in rage to hear

Are these sentences correct:

1) The dictator was in rage to hear that his troops had been defeated.

2) The dictator was in shock to hear that his troops had been defeated.

I think they are fine, but I had a sudden doubt. I know we can say 'was enraged to hear' and 'was shocked to hear', but I am not entire sure that 'in rage to hear' and 'in shock to hear' work.

No. Use "enraged" and "shocked".
"in rage" doesn't work at all. Someone can be "in a rage".
You could say he was "in shock" before "after hearing that ..." but not before "to hear".
