Somebody who's overly optimistic to the point it becomes irritating or unrealistic.

No matter what you might say to them or how you point out the reality of the situation, they refuse to accept that the situation can't turn out favorably.

It doesn't have to be negative. You can address someone who is extremely optimistic as incurable optimist.

Andrew would you please explain how you use the verb address above. I looked at the definitions but I cannot understand it. Might you mean call or refer to instead of address?

Thank you.

address

vb (transitive)
  • to mark (a letter, parcel, etc) with an address
  • to speak to, refer to in speaking, or deliver a speech to

You can address someone who is extremely optimistic as incurable optimist.

That sentence does not work for me. I would say:

You can call someone who is extremely optimistic an incurable optimist.
You can refer to someone who is extremely optimistic as an incurable optimist.

Do you mean the sentence does not make sense to me? If not, would you please explain your use of verb work?

Thank you.

I am still confused. Address means speak to, call, refer to. Does address mean term/name here? Let's compare these two.

1) You can address someone who is extremely optimistic as incurable optimist

1 is like giving a name, not speak to they.

2) When they address old friends they remember good memories.

Isn't 2 is very different from 1? 2 is to speak of old friends.

Thank you.

"Address" in my sentence means "to refer to".

It doesn't work for me means that it does not seem to be what I would consider successful/appropriate/relevant/correct.

I cannot necessarily justify with hard evidence my feeling of dissatisfaction. I think it's possible that others might find it acceptable. It's an expression of a personal feeling.

Would you please explain how you use necessarily above?

I looked the definition but because its your sentence your explanation would be better.

Thank you.
