George Prochnik would like would like the world to put a sock in it. He makes his case in a new book,Listenning for Meaning in a World of Noise. Here he explains himself (using his indoor voice)

What does "indoor voice" mean?

Jason

It's not a term I'm familiar with so I would guess that it's a term from the book.

Parents of small children often use the term indoor voice when they want them to stop shouting.

Do you understand the idiom 'put a sock in it' (which refers to the nearest thing to volume control on an old gramophone with a horn)? If you did, you would probably have been able to guess.
