I am confused by subject and verb agreement in such sentences?

1. "Is Susan and her husband working now?"

2. "Is Susan and her husband artists?"

I am confused by subject and verb agreement in such sentences.

1. "[STRIKE]Is[/STRIKE] Are Susan and her husband working now?"

2. "[STRIKE]Is[/STRIKE] Are Susan and her husband artists?"

See above. If you were giving a statement instead of a question, I don't think you'd have any trouble realising that the verb form needs to be the third person plural (they). The same goes for the construction of a question.

Susan and her husband are artists.
Are Susan and her husband artists?
