When referring to people in your guild, which is the correct terminology? I cannot find an answer on google, surprisingly.

Welcome to the forum. :hi:

What do you mean by "people in your guild"?. I'm not "in a guild" and I don't know anyone who is.

Note my changes above. Please make sure that the relevant words appear in both your title and the main body of your post. Remember that "Google" is still a brand name so should be capitalised.

I'm a leader in an MMORPG guild and I wish to refer to my "guildees" in the correct way. I have seen it spelt guildies and guildees. What do you think sounds better, or rather, which is correct?

If I had to choose one of them, I'd go for "guildee". I've found a UK-based Meetup group that seems to be a "Gaming Guild" and the founder refers to his members as "Guildees".

Neither sounds good to me. Have you considered 'guilders', 'guild members' or simply 'players'?

NOTE TO THE CURIOUS: MMORPG means massively multiplayer online role playing game.

I think this is a US thing. As a Brit, I've never hear of the word guildees.

And I'm pretty certain that guildies is either incorrect or just a very chummy way of referring to what I'd call my fellow guild members.

Is the -ee suffix in guildee the same as in referee, addressee, employee, trainee, etc.?

The -ie suffix makes guildie feel like a diminutive. Am I correct?

Now that it's been explained, that's how I understand it — and guildie is the only way I'd spell it.

Yes, or whatever you call a familiar nickname like bestie.

Do you mean that you've never heard guildee? Do you think it could be a misspelling of guildie, then?

Yes and yes.

Today is the first time I've seen the word. When I saw "guildee", I guessed that it was a gamers' term and that it meant something like "a person who has been 'guilded'". That led me to speculate that "guilding" was a process of being made subject to a "guild". This didn't sound completely implausible, but I felt somewhat relieved when I realized that guildie was also on offer as a friendly way to refer to fellow guild-members. So yes, the -ee version looks wrong.

Then you have words like "trustee"? Referring to a member of a board... Hmm, I'll smoke on it, but it looks as if guildie is holding more ground from the discourse that just ensued. If you simply google the two words in question(I feel like comma should go here) you will see a plethora of people using either one or the other. This forum is pretty awesome, and I think I will amass a treasury of grammatical nuance by just merely browsing through different threads. Thanks guys and gals!

Guildie and guidee sound informal and slangy, similar to tradie (tradesman), postie (postman), brickie (bricklayer) or wharfie (dock-worker).
I prefer Rover's terms for official or formal use.

I've heard the term used, but I can't say I've ever seen it in print. Here's a video clip of it being used. Whoever did the subtitles chose the 'guildies' spelling, for what that's worth.

The series was written and filmed in New Zealand.

He must be saying guildies.

guildees doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Plus, it would probably be stressed on the final syllable, not the first. I assume that it's a simple misspelling of guildies.

It could be that they're just not too bothered by the spelling- you will find guildy used too.
