Is 'on the contrary" unnecessary in the sentence?

The job was not interesting but on the contrary it was well paid
 
It's wrong. You could use 'on the other hand'.

Cannot the following sentence sufficient to convey the meaning:

The job was not interesting but it was well paid.


Is not "on the contrary/on the other hand" redundant in the above sentence?

'On the contrary' is not redundant - it's wrong. 'On the other hand' is not necessary, but it is not redundant if you wish to emphasise the advantage of the good pay.
 
We can't say it's redundant. We need something to connect the two sentences. Either but or on the other hand. There must be something in between. So you see it's not redundant.
