In most textbooks in a sentence such as "I study at university" they use present simple but in "Longman English Grammar Practice" by L.G. Alexander the book uses the progressive.
Could you please tell which tense is most common?

The sentence is "My daughter is studying English at Durham University.

In the link you posted, there is a sentence next to the number 2. It is the sentence directly above "My daughter is studying English at Durham University". Did you read it? Did you understand it?

Yes, and that's why I asked this question. Native speakers as far as I know use present simple in "she studies at school" and in similar sentences but here it says this action is temporary.

The action is temporary. You don't study at university for your entire life, do you? You study for three or four years, generally. So, at this stage of her life, her daughter is studying at university.

Native speakers do not normally use the present simple in this context.
