Is the sentence fine with the structure of "there were... adopting..."?

My intuition tells me that the grammatical structure "there were... adopting..." is awkward.

It"s OK. OR ".....there were many studies that used the method......"
There are/were many statements using that structure. OR There are/were many statements that used that structure.

Since "until 2001" has been used there, if I add "although there was no consensus about its benefit" to follow "Until 2001, there were many phase I and II studies, even a few phase III studies, adopting the method in the treatment of liver cancer," can I express "although there was no consensus about its benefit" as " although no consensus had been reached" (because I am trying to use past perfect)? To use present perfect will be wrong?

Present perfect would be wrong, but "although there was no consensus about its benefit" is okay. (That's simple past, not present perfect).

If you try to string all that into one sentence, it's going to be a whopper. You may want to rewrite. Maybe "Despite a lack of consensus about the benefits of the method in treating liver cancer, it was adopted in many Phase I and Phase II studies, as well a few Phase III studies until 2001."
