The term "battle ax" originally referred to a weapon of war used in ancient times but currently refers to a domineering woman that could be a boss or even a wife.

Given that idioms are generally held to be phrases that have a meaning that is different from the dictionary meaning of the individual words, battleax[e] isn't an idiom, but you could call it an idiomatic usage if you like, though its meaning is given in dictionaries, but it has changed quite a lot from the original meaning.
