[Vocabulary] It dawned on me

I heard someone say "realisation dawned on me..." and I found it weird for these 2 words to pair up.

I usually use: "It dawned on me; The severity of the situation dawned on me etc"

I checked various dictionaries and could not find the word "realisation" paired with "dawned on.."

It just sounded weird to me, like unnecessarily "big sounding" I looked up some online fiction and saw several authors using the phrase "realisation dawned" or "realisation dawned on me/him etc".

Please advise if pairing these words up is a good phrase.
 
I understand what you mean, but it sounds quite natural to pair those words.
