What's the meaning of ' it goes without saying'?
Thank you!
***** NOT A TEACHER *****
Hello, Yura Reiri:
(1) You have asked about an interesting saying.
(2) I guess that it could mean many things -- depending on the context.
(3) Here is an example of how many ordinary people use it:
Wife: Do you love me?
Husband: Of course.
Wife: Then why don't you ever tell me?
Husband: Honey, it goes without saying that I love you. I married you,
didn't I? If I hadn't loved you, I wouldn't have married you.
As Member Kazewolf put it: "
Obviously I love you. Why do you need
me to tell you?"
(4) Of course, we human beings have feelings. We like people to tell us
that they love us. Obviously, children love their parents if their parents
are good parents. Nevertheless, those parents like it if their children
tell them. That's why we Americans have Mother's Day and Father's Day.
I understand that in some countries they have Teacher's Day.
(5) Here is one of my favorite quotations to share with you. It comes
from a French leader named Tallyrand, who lived many years ago:
"Things that go without saying go even better if they are said."
I do not know what M. Talleyrand was referring to (maybe international
politics?), but for ordinary people like me, it means:
When someone does something nice for you, tell him/her -- orally
or in writing. Yes, it is obvious that you appreciated what s/he did.
But it is even better for him/her
and you if you actually
express
your appreciation.
