a. It was the first time I’d won since I’d learnt to play chess.
b. It was the first time I won since I’d learnt to play chess.

Are they both acceptable and do they sound natural?
What is the difference between them?

 
I see no reason to use the past perfect. Do you?
 
I thought that there is no need to use the past perfect tense when the past tense is clear enough.
 
It was the first time I won since I learned to play chess.
Isn't this correct?
 
Did you notice the correct version shown in post #3?
