It was the last evening of Carnival.
This is a quote from The Arrow of Gold by Joseph Conrad. Why does he not use an article before 'Carnival'? Is it because he treats it as a proper name?

A bit further, however, he writes 'the Carnival'.

In what complete sentence?

Is he talking about this particular Carnival in that sentence?
