As opposed to, honestly, hair metal was pretty gay. I mean yeah, Slayer wore makeup, okay, but not to the extent… we just wore black eyeliner, which what we were doing was copying Ozzy at the time because it looked evil. It was a little rebellious, but it wasn’t long after that we were convinced we didn’t need that. I could not see myself wearing pink at all. It would be a natural thing to do. And there are some artists that write happy music, or certain keys or a combination of keys, they’re happy notes. They make you feel good. But I like the minors, the notes that sound menacing, and Jeff feels the same way. I’m sure Kerry understands that philosophy about music, where the heavier stuff, the darker stuff is the stuff we like.

Caught In A Mosh, Martin Popoff.

What does "It would be a natural thing to do" refer to? What is the meaning of "would" here? A "conditional would", like in "I would help if I had the time"?

He seems to be saying that wearing pink would be a natural thing to do, but he doesn't want to do it.

Thanks. Why then not say "would have been a natural thing to do" if he is talking about something that didn't happen?

In the next abstract he uses the same expression
"So to try to find a band that touches on those notes that are unusual or give you the creeps and make the hair on your back stand up, give you the goosebumps, that’s what I search for in
music. So I think it was a natural thing for Slayer to do because that’s what we loved".

The think the word 'It' refers to wearing pink, but it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I think what happened is that he says he wouldn't wear pink and then rethinks and changes his mind. It's not too clear. You certainly shouldn't use this as a model.

Are you sure you transcribed that sentence correctly? It's not grammatically complete. There appears to be a word or words (probably a musical genre) missing after "to".
(Also please note that using "gay" as an insult, as the writer has done here, should not be copied.)

Would it be more correct to say "It would have been a natural thing to do"?

You're trying to analyze this way too deeply. He's simply reminiscing that he didn't want to wear pink, although it would have been right in line with what other artists were doing. Neither was he interested in "happy" feel-good music. He was interested in minor keys and darker ambiance.

Don't use the memoirs of rock-stars (likely muddled by drugs) as a grammatical reference or try to analyze their language use. Just enjoy the story for what it is - a memoir of a rock-star from the heydays of heavy metal. Appreciate the historical insight, not the grammar.
