Hi, everyone. I'm discussing why some people think universities should focus on academic study only. Which version is correct? Also, is the word 'only' at the right place?

Since employment skills can be gained at work, it would be better for students to concentrate on academic study only so that their time can be best used.

Since employment skills can be gained at work, students would be better use their time if they
concentrate on academic study only.

I wrote both sentences.

Since employment skills can be gained at work, it would be better for students to just
concentrate on academic study [STRIKE]only[/STRIKE] so that their time is better.

Since employment skills can be gained at work, students would be better
off using their time just concentrating on academic study [STRIKE]only[/STRIKE].

I wrote both sentences.
Putting only at the end of a sentence is grammatical but usually not natural.

You might also like to look up the use of better off.

1. Since employment skills can be gained at work, it would be better for students to concentrate only on academic study [STRIKE]only[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]so that their time can be best used[/STRIKE] to make the best use of their time.

2. Since employment skills can be gained at work, students would be better use their time if they concentrate on academic study only. :cross: because the underlined section is not grammatical.

I wrote both sentences.

See above. As you can see, I would move "only" to immediately after "concentrate" and before "on academic studies".
What exactly do you mean by "employment skills"?

Thanks, Charlie. 'Their time is better' sounds so bizarre. Did you forget to type 'used', like 'their time is better used'.

I am trying to answer this essay question. I saw it on a Chinese website. Is the bold correct? I understand 'only' is in the wrong place.

Some people believe that university education should focus on the skills of employment for the future. Others think it should focus on academic study only. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

The bold part is not grammatical, particularly "the skills of employment".

Even in such a short sentence, putting 'only' at the end of the sentence isn't good?

The focus should be on academic study only.

The focus should only be on academic study.
