I am not sure the parts in bold are correct. Can I use either the definite or the indefinite article in 1 and 3 and is the article optional in 5?
From Essential Progess by Maia Japoshvili. Write a descrption of your favourite animal.

1. Kangaroos live in the/an Australian outback.
2. They hop and leap across big distances. (Is "across" optional?)
3. They have an/the ability to hop across big fistances
4. Koalas eat leaves, primarily eucaliptus leaves. (Should I use a hyphen instead? Koalas eat leaves-primarily eucaliptus leaves.)
5. They live in eucaliptus (the) forests and communicate through a variety of vocalisations.

5. They live in eucalyptus (the) forests and communicate through a variety of vocalisations.
1. Only "the" works. There is only one Australian outback.
2. You could omit "across" but it would be less natural.
3. Use "the". It's almost a set phrase - "Someone has the ability to do something".
4. You can use either a comma or a dash.
5. No, you definitely can't put "the" between "eucalyptus" and "forests".

Please note my various corrections in the quote box. Take more care with your spelling. It's a good idea to install an English spell-checker on your browser. It would have flagged up basic mistakes such as "progess", "descrption" and "eucaliptus".

Sorry, I meant "in the eucalyptus forests". Because I am talking about eucalyptus forests, does it make them specific forests and should I use the article because of that?

Thanks. I have to install it.

5. You can say "in the eucalyptus forests" on the basis you're talking about specific eucalyptus forests in the Australian outback. However, since koalas always live amongst eucalyptus trees, you could also omit the article and talk about the general habitat of all koalas.
