Learn of the status

In this post emsr2d2 said '"Learn of the status" makes no sense'. Does it make sense in the context below?
'Anyone who has made a claim for compensation can learn of the status of it from the website.'

It's understandable but "check the status" is much more natural.
 
"Check its status" rather than "the status of it" sound more natural to me.
 
And if you really feel the need to use learn, it would work better for me without of. However, it's not a natural sentence to me.
