[Grammar] less or smaller

I wonder which one is correct?

1) My share of cake is less than yours.
2) My share of cake is smaller than yours.

Can it be the case that both are correct depending on the meaning?

1) amount
2) size
 
Try:

My piece of cake is smaller than yours.
