I've been working like a dog recently.

In English there seems to be a methaphor linking a dog with hard work.

In my native language there is association with a horse for this case.

Well, could you clarify what is the origin of this methaphor. This could help me remember this set expression easier. Maybe it is about sheep dogs or something.

I've never known a dog to work at anything except maybe to snatch a biscuit while nobody is looking. Having said that, it is an English expression. However, it's probably not as popular as it once was. (Most working dogs live on farms or ranches.)
