I think 'become' is redundant because 'make' already carries the meaning of 'become' according to definition#8 at http://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/make_1?q=make

To me, the sentence with "become" sounds more coercive. "They forced me to become a better person".

You could avoid the redundancy by saying they made me into a better person.
