Hello.

What is the difference between sentence 1 and 2 concerning meaning, formality etc.?

1-"I am sure he will make a lot progress if he is given this opportunity"
2-"I am sure he will make a lot of progress if he is given this opportunity"

Thanks

2 would be grammatically correct if you end it with a full stop.

You cannot omit 'of'.
