Dad flicked the coin back at me. “I’m actually not surprised you found one. We have dozens in the cellar at Hecate.”

Well, that explained it, then. Secret demon hunter and thief. Man, did I know how to pick ’em. ??

Note: Her ex-boyfriend -he's a demon hunter- gave the coin her. (But she told her father that she found it). So, she figured out where her ex found it.

(1) Tinkerbell, did you want an explanation of the expression? If you did, she was saying to herself "Man, I sure know how to choose my friends/boyfriends. He hunts demons and he steals too."

(2) This is not always a negative expression. You go to a dance with a handsome guy. Your friends whisper to you, "He is so good looking! You sure know how to pick them!"

(3) If you are telling someone about what happened in paragraph #2, you might say "They said he was so good looking, and, man, did I know how to pick them!"

The expression is flexible and can be said in different ways.
