manufacture for produce

Could I use "manufacture" for "produce" in terms of different foods as in "Heinz manufactures really good ketchup?
 
Would "manufacture" be equivalent to "produce" in this context?
 
If not, why would Rover had said "Yes"?
 
I thought there might be a slight difference in meaning. Now it's clarified. Thanks.
 
In BrE, by the way, you're far more likely to hear "Heinz makes really good ketchup".
 
But there would be machinery involved in the production process,wouldn't be?
 
Yes, but we don't think about it like that. When I think about a product made by a specific company, I don't actually consider the whole manufacturing process. That company simply makes a food or drink. One particular company in the UK even uses the word in their famous tagline:

Mr Kipling - makes exceedingly good cakes.

That tagline definitely wouldn't have the same ring to it if it were "Mr Kipling manufactures exceedingly good cakes!"

I agree.

'Makes' allows us to kid ourselves that a benign old gentleman called Mr Kipling is lovingly making his cakes by hand. 'Manufactures' would shatter that illusion.

I hadn't. I suppose it won't be long before it's 'Mr and Ms Kipling' - and then 'Ms and Mr Kipling'. They don't have the same ring to this (non-benign) old man.
