Many / Much of the audience enjoyed the wonderful musical performance.

Which word should I use? If neither, which word is appropriate? Or should the sentence be reworded?

Thanks.

Audience is not countable. Much of the audience. Many members of the audience.

(What was wrong with the others? They didn't like the music? They couldn't hear?)

I think they were not interested in music. Their parents must have"forced" them to go with them.:-?
.

In BrE, many would work- we happily use plural verbs and can treat collective nouns as plural.

Thanks, Tdol.

Would it be better if I change the sentence to?:

Many in the audience enjoyed the wonderful musical performance.

That is a good way around the problem.
