Michael's wife fixes her husband's back. Suddenly Benson, his talking pig, enters the room. So he excuses his wife to allow him to leave her.

If he excuses his wife, he is allowing her to leave him.

I have, again, had to change your thread title. We have explained before that titles should include some/all of the words/phrases you are asking us about. Please save us the effort in future by making all of your thread titles relevant and unique.

In his post #2, Raymott pointed out that "... he excuses his wife to allow him to leave her" didn't make sense. He explained the meaning of 'he excuses his wife'.

When you excuse someone, the one being excused leaves, not you, the excuser.

Could you please post the whole answer?

I am sorry!

Why is "If" really needed?

Do you mean this question? It is an example to explain why your last sentence does not make sense.

By the way, you did not ask a question in the first post.
