British English speakers say 'Mum'; American English speakers say 'Mom'.

Speakers of other varieties of English will answer for themselves.

If in doubt, ask your mother what she wants you to call her.

Mum, Mom and Mam are all used. Different regions can use different forms.

Other versions used (at least in AmE) are 'mother', 'ma', 'mama', 'mommy', and 'momma'. I'm sure there are more.


My college roommate's fiance called her parents by their given names. I just assumed she was adopted since she always called her mother 'Susan' and father 'Robert', but he said that no, she had the unusual habit of calling her natural parents by their real names instead of some kind of variant of mother/father.

Some Quakers (aka Friends) abjure all titles including Mother and Father. I have friends who are Friends and always addressed their parents by their first names.

I'm from the south of England and only use "Mum". Two of my friends from the Midlands (near Birmingham) use "Mom".

I didn't know that, but it is an interesting idea- I had never thought of them as titles.
