Most vs the most

Take note of the following scenario:

3 old friends talking about their loves in youth:

One says:

- I had the most girlfriends.

I would normally say "most", because "the most" sounds a little weird. But the latter seems grammatically correct to me.

Which choice would be the grammatically correct one?

When you mean 'the largest number of', say 'the most'.
