My dog got hold of this?

Does "got hold of" mean "bite" or grab"? The transation goes "My dog bit this", so I'm confused.

ex)The other day my dog chewed one of my new running shoes. Hoping to save my investment, I took it to a shoe-repair shop, "My dog got hold of this," I told the repairman, "What do you recommend?" Immediately he replied, "Give your dog the other shoe."

"to get hold of" basically means "get". Since it is a dog and the shoe needs repair it it obvious that the dog bit it, therefore a possible translation, is "bite". However, if a child "gets a hold" of some lipstick and writes on the wall with it we can also substitute with "got" or "found", but of course not "bit".
