I would like you to imagine a situation where John is in a doctor's clinic and there is a queue and patients have to go inside the doctor's chamber according to their number. John receives an emergency call and walks out to talk only to find out upon returning that the person behind him went in the chamber first because he wasn't present.

What can John say?

My number went past so person behind me went in the chamber before me.

Doctors don't have chambers. Judges have chambers. Doctors have consulting rooms.

John missed his turn.

John missed his turn.
That expresses the situation but it doesn't answer the OP's question "What could John say?" Before anyone can answer that, tufguy needs to answer the question in post #2.

They have exam(ination) rooms in their offices.

Who is he saying it to?
He is saying it to the receptionist at the clinic or may be his friend while telling him about missing his turn or it could be a patient that has asked him why didn't he go in the consultation room when it was his turn.

I would say something like "I missed my number being called."

What Can John say the following?

My number went past so person behind me went in the chamber before me. ❌
Note my corrections above.

If he's talking to the receptionist, he'd say something like "I'm sorry. I had to take an urgent call and I missed my number. What should I do now?"

If he's telling a friend the story later, he'd say "I was taking an urgent call and I missed my number being called at the doctor's surgery!"

If another patient asks him why he didn't go in, he'd say "I had to take an urgent call". (Alternatively, he could say "Mind your own business!")
