neglect or ignore

Here's the quote:
"suppose the planet were hit by a comet,let's neglect the fact some people would be killed by impact,suppose it was just economic damage."
AS far as I know "neglect" means fail to do something necessary,and "ignore" means deliberately pay no attention to something. In this context,I just see we deliberately pay no attention to the fact,not fail to pay attention to the fact.so why it should be neglect not ignore?

It should be "ignore".
