Hello.

Do you say "We celebrate New Year" or "New Year's Day"? Which is more often used?
For more context:
"In the winter in my country people celebrate New Year. Families and friends meet at the table."

I would say we celebrate the new year.

I would say we celebrate the new year.

I didn't know that it's unnecessary to capitalise it. Thanks. Is "meet at the table" correct?

We do capitalize New Year's Day.

I don't know what you mean by "meet at the table".

If you're referring to the changing of the year, then "the new year" should not be capitalised. If you're referring to the celebration itself, it's "New Year" (in AmE, I believe it's "New Year's"). The relevant days are New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

In BrE, we would ask people "What are you doing for New Year?" to mean "What will you be doing on the evening of December 31st to celebrate the arrival of the new year?"

And "New Year's Eve" is 31st December and "New Year's Day" is 1st January. If I remember correctly.
