"Sheila had a lot of work last year, that's why she wasn't able to attend all lessons".

There's a comma splice. Otherwise it's OK. It would probably be a good idea to specify 'outside' before 'work'; otherwise it might be misinterpreted as meaning she couldn't be bothered to do so much class-work. ;-)
