Hi,

John not only volunteered to teach kids who were poor but even became a full time art teacher.

Instead of the usual not only + also, is putting not only + even just fine?

Yes, it is. What you wrote is correct and natural, but note my corrections (including italics) to your question. Also, use "full-time".
