Slaves or... football players: Real Madrid have paid over a hundred million dollars for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sort of... I think even Ronaldo would say that he doesn't belong to the club who has paid 'for' him - however much they've paid. ;-)

So I think footballers are not like slaves, but rather belong to the exceptional case I mentioned - which needs to be widened, to apply when 'for' applies to anything but a transfer of ownership (in a legal rather than moral sense).
