What does "old strains" mean? Does it mean "old habits"?

--------------------------
The New York Times
@nytimes
"Racism never disappears but adapts to new circumstances when old strains rise from the dark vaults of American history," writes Cathy Park Hong in
@NYTMag

It could mean formerly-common patterns of behavior or formerly-common stresses between communities.

For some people it's really important to feel important.

What you need to know about that is Kathy Park Hong is doing what is called virtue signalling.

Her statement does not look like virtue signaling (American spelling) to me. Virtue signaling is ostentatiously making people aware that you are doing something you expect them to consider virtuous. People who accuse others of virtue signaling consider the behavior to be insincere.

Yep. Kathy Park Hong is a daughter of parents who are both Korean, and she has done very well here. (She's a professor.)

Unfortunately, some statements have nothing to do with the truth.

Two things. One, there is no such thing as a strain of racism. Two, she is trashing the country her parents chose to make their home (and hers). It's a slap at the people who raised her. Shame!

(Thread closed.)

Can we calm things down a bit- these are times to get along.
