[Grammar] On a Sunday or on Sunday

Is it necessary put "a" before Sunday (or another day of week)?

For example:
"It's 6 am on a Sunday, but I'm going to work." or I can just write "It's 6 am on Sunday, (...)"?
 
Either could be correct depending on context.
