(1) From reading American newspapers, I believe that most

Americans prefer "cars on the street."

(a) I loved to be out on the street as a newspaper reporter.

(b) I learned as much from my newspaper colleagues as I did

in the street.

Again, I believe that most Americans prefer on in such sentences.

(Both quotations are from American journalists.)

I have confused the use of preposition before "the street".
Parser is right. "In" is used in BE while "on" in AE. Sorry for the mistake.:-(
