On the tube/in the tube/ by (the) tube

Please help, I need to know which of these sentences are correct and which are wrong. Can I also say "people in the tube"? Thank you.
1. Many people travel on the tube every day.
2. Many people travel in the tube every day.
3. Many people travel by tube every day.

They are all possible. For me, #1 is the most natural.
 
I wouldn't use #2 at all.
